VRP executive coordinator Ray Bondin explained that chewing gum contains chemicals that seriously stain and damage natural paving.

In a joint operation with the Office of the Prime Minister, chewing gum residue was removed from the steps and the pavement of the Auberge de Castille by a procedure that uses chemicals that get rid of the gum without damaging the paving.

Yesterday, the gum-busting team set to work on the steps of St John’s Co-Cathedral. In this area there is concern that chewing gum may become stuck on to people’s shoes, carried into the cathedral and tarnish the ornate floor.

Dr Bondin spoke of plans to rid all Valletta of chewing gum residue. The system being used is operated by Ozosystems Ltd, a company that has brought in apparatus for this purpose.
