The police were informed that a diver had gone missing at the same time that the body was recovered. It was later confirmed that the man reported missing was the one found in the sea. Police officers and members of the Civil Protection Department, together with a number of medics rushed to the scene.

However, despite being given first aid, the man was certified dead.

The 54 year-old, visiting the country with his wife, was diving in the vicinity of the Azure Window, at a depth of around 10 metres at 10.30am. He was found afloat a quarter of an hour later. Duty Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona is heading the inquiry and ordered an autopsy. The investigation is being carried out by Gozo district police.
