Unemployment Is on the rise – MLP

Malta Independent Wednesday, 16 June 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

The statistics showed that almost 9,000 people are registering for work, indicating that unemployment is still on the rise. The government is trying to deny this state of affairs, which shows it has lost contact with the people, the MLP said.

The employment sector needs serious professional attention. The government must work to amend the “disastrous situation” of the level of female participation in the job market. Every sector of the labour market shows the Nationalist Party’s lack of initiative in making the interests of workers a priority, the statement continued.

The MLP believes that once the government admits the situation does not look good, it should work towards strengthening the tourism sector and attracting investment. The government should take the General Workers’ Union’s work in this sector as an example.

Government must also improve the operations of the Employment and Training Centre so that it has the tools it needs to face the challenges imposed by this situation, the statement concluded.
