Dr Sant, together with the two MLP deputy leaders Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon, party secretary Jason Micallef and party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, was meeting some of the MLP’s candidates for the EP election.

Dr Sant said that the last time the gap between the MLP and the Nationalist Party in a national election was so big was way back in 1955.

He thanked all the candidates for their work and added that the result obtained was excellent, showing that the message the MLP wanted to give had reached the people.The three MEPs elected on behalf of the MLP will now be meeting the party leadership to draw up a plan.

As to the five MLP candidates who were not elected, Dr Sant said that they had a bright political future, both on the local scene as well as in Europe. During the meeting, some of the candidates gave their views following the election. Owen Bonnici said that he would like to continue working for the party. Joseph Muscat said that the collective effort put in by the MLP had made an impact and invited the candidates who were not elected to continue giving their support.

Louis Grech said that the MLP priorities before the election remained the same afterwards. Robert Micallef said he was proud to have formed part of a winning team and promised his contribution towards a Labour victory in the general election. Glenn Bedingfield said that last Saturday’s result should serve to strengthen the party.Jason Micallef, for his part, said that when the MLP worked as one unit it always succeeded.
