Mr Galdes yesterday informed the Malta Labour Party that he will be contesting the casual election.
Soon after the results of last Saturday’s election were announced, Dr Attard Montalto announced that his election as MEP would mean a change in his political career.
He has been a Labour MP since 1987, and was elected from two districts, in 1992, 1996 and 1998, before his election from the sixth district in last year’s election.
A casual election will now have to be held to fill his vacated seat. Mr Galdes is the only candidate who can contest this election because all the other candidates who contested the sixth district on behalf of the MLP have all already been elected.
Marie Louise Coleiro and Charles Mangion were elected from the sixth district with Dr Attard Montalto, while Joe Debono Grech was elected from the eighth district and Gavin Gulia from the seventh.
