Victor Magri, 40 from Balzan, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to being in possession of cannabis in circumstances showing it was not for his personal use last Tuesday. He allegedly was in possession of the drugs in an area frequented by youths. He was also charged with relapsing in view of previous convictions.
In his objection to the accused being granted bail, prosecuting inspector Nezren Grixti told the court the man had already tried to approach a witness. The accusations made against Magri carry a maximum sentence.
Although defence attorney Giannella Caruana Curran said the accused should be presumed innocent before proven guilty, presiding Magistrate Lawrence Quintano denied Magri bail on the grounds that evidence might be tampered with.
The second man charged yesterday was 23-year-old Owen Bonnici, from Qormi. The court granted him bail and put him under house arrest after he denied being in possession of cannabis in circumstances suggesting it was not for his personal use last Tuesday. Inspector Grixti said he did not have any non-police witnesses in the case against Bonnici.
Bonnici, who works as a barman at the Qormi football club, told the police who had left the drugs there, said the inspector. The accused was put under house arrest against a Lm5,000 personal guarantee and ordered to pay a Lm1,000 deposit.
The court ordered the last man’s name not to be published. This man, a 22-year-old from Qormi, was put on probation for 18 months after admitting possession of cannabis and heroin. Magistrate Quintano said the man’s wife and parents must help him get back on the right track during his probation time.
Inspectors Nezren Grixti and Pierre Grech prosecuted while Dr Joe Giglio appeared for Bonnici and Dr Joe Brincat appeared for the third man charged.
