Cathedral Organ being restored

Malta Independent Saturday, 19 June 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

The restoration of this organ and the Cappella d’Italia are two projects that the Valletta Rehabilitation Project (VRP) within the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry is currently undertaking at St John’s.

These two projects are being financed by the Italian Protocol and by VRP.

The restoration of the musical elements of the organ has been entrusted to Fratteli Ruffatti of Padova.

The project will see the organ restored and in working order.

Before the musical parts were exported to Italy all the elements were documented by the Maltese cooperative ReCoop.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the St Johns Co-Cathedral Foundation.

The superintendent of Cultural Heritage supervised the exportation of the parts.

Dun Gwann Azzopardi has been commissioned to do an art historical report on the organ: he has described it as one of the most historically important organs in Malta.

VRP executive coordinator Ray Bondin is coordinating the project.
