In a statement, Archbishop Joseph Mercieca, Gozo Bishop Nikol Cauchi and Auxiliary Bishop Annetto Depasquale also noted that the treaty safeguards the status of religion in the member states and requested that the EU holds an open dialogue with them. “This recognised the identity and specific contribution of religions,” the Curia said.

At the same time, the Curia expressed its disappointment that there were governments that opposed an explicit recognition of Europe’s Christian roots. Nobody can deny the facts of history and it was necessary that they are publicly recognised, the Curia added.

It is disappointing that the approved constitution does not mention Europe’s Christian roots. As Pope John Paul said at the weekend, “we cannot renounce to our roots.”.

The bishops expressed their gratitude for the commitment shown by the Maltese government and other governments in defending Europe’s Christian roots. It is a pity that their sterling work did not bring about the desired results.
