When Emanuel Debono used to work at Lloyds Shipping Registry, part of his salary was invested in the company on the understanding that he would get a return on his investment when he retired.

Mr Debono always paid the full national insurance. On his retirement the amount of his return on investment was deducted from his pension. He claimed the money he received from Lloyds was not a service pension but a private investment.

In his application, Mr Debono said this shows discrimination against those who choose to invest their money in their employer’s company as opposed to those who put their money in the bank or buy stocks.

Mr Debono’s monthly pension has been reduced and therefore he said that every month, his rights are being violated.

He has demanded the situation to be remedied as soon as possible.

The application was filed yesterday by Dr Joe Brincat in the First Hall of the Civil Court.
