Electoral Reform: AD General Secretary writes to PN and MLP

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 June 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

AD’s general secretary Stephen Cachia has written to the general secretary of the Malta Labour Party Jason Micallef and to the general secretary of the Nationalist Party Joe Saliba to propose a meeting between the three parties on electoral reform.

In a letter addressed to the general secretaries of the other two parties Stephen Cachia welcomed the fact that the other two parties have already expressed interest in discussing these reforms.

“In the light of the recent debate between us during TV programmes Xarabank and Bondiplus, in which there was general agreement on the need for discussions between the three parties on electoral reform that is fair for all parties, I am writing to propose a meeting between the three political parties so that these discussion can commence".

Stephen Cachia added that AD has taken this initiative in the light of the party's success in the recent European and local elections.

“The country can no longer afford an electoral system which could potentially deny representation to a party which fails to get more than 16 per cent in one district. This threshold is a barrier for real political pluralism. Malta remains the only country in Europe where only two parties are represented in Parliament. The fact that nearly one tenth of the electorate has voted for AD on 12 June makes such a reform only more urgent.”
