“A famous quote from Darwin states that it is not the strongest of species that survive, but the ones most adaptable to change. In a sense this can be applied to Malta’s membership in the European Union. As a small state with hardly any natural resources, Malta cannot be termed a strong country in this sense. Its main strength lies in the fact that, because of its size, it should be able to adapt more rapidly to change,” argues the editorial.

The Employer states that Malta has a history of adaptation – it has never been able to dictate the circumstances that affect it. It can be said that globalisation has affected Malta since the beginning of its history, before the term became cliché, since international events have always shaped its character, as testified by our rich culture and

history.

“Yet it has thrived and, in spite of various threats over the years, has managed to provide for a decent standard of living to its citizens. Malta’s post war history may be termed as an economic miracle. It has gained independence, and transformed its economy to one that is among the most diversified in the world.”

While pointing out that Malta cannot boast of significant economies of scale in any sector in which it operates, and this often translates into a competitive disadvantage, the editorial then makes the point that, “Our strengths lie in the quality of our human resource, our character and the speed with which we can adapt to changing economic scenarios.”

“The main challenge facing us, as a member of the EU, will be our flexibility and the extent to which we can develop a culture of innovation and proactivity. History has proven that, with focus and determination, we can pass this test,” concludes the editorial.
