The whole project has been coordinated and supervised by Fr Francis Azzopardi OFM Cap. The restoration work, which finished recently, was begun in May 1999 by Mr Joseph Schiro’ and continued by Mr Joseph Zammit.

This notable collection of publications is made up of the Patrologia Latina consisting of 217 volumes, including four volumes of Indexes. It was printed in Paris between 1844 and 1864. On the other hand, the Patrologia Graeca, which consists of 162 volumes in Greek with Latin translation, was printed in Paris between 1856 and 1866.

The Capuchin Province Library has in its possession various books of extraordinary importance and value, some even dating back to the late 16th century. Ordinary users of this library are the members of the Capuchin Province. However, although the library is of a private and monastic character, lay scholars and researchers are admitted by appointment and offered all possible assistance and help.

APS Bank Marketing Unit senior manager Alfred Triganza said that it is the bank’s aim to contribute towards the implementation of such projects aimed at bringing back to light Malta’s national heritage. Apart from contributing to the restoration of these publications, the bank is also donating a set of fire extinguishers and related material in order to enhance the current level of protection of the entire premises housing the library and the valuable contents they contain.

Fr Francis Azzopardi was also entrusted with the task of setting up the library way back in 1962. The enthusiasm he showed in his work will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.
