These include the Progressive Farmers Union, Din l-Art Helwa, the Jesuit Province in Malta, Friends of the Earth (Malta), Nature Trust, Moviment Graffitti, Alternattiva Demokratika, the Malta Labour Party, Inizjamed, Move! Organisation, Zminijietna, Alternattiva Demokratika Zghazagh, International Animal Rescue, Azzjoni Pozittiva, Vegetarian Society, Pembroke Residents Association, the University Chaplaincy, MaltaOrganic Agriculture Movement, Kopin, Ghaqda Zghazagh Xellugin and Farmers’ Central Co-Operative Society. Various opinion makers, including exponents of the Nationalist Party, also oppose the proposed development. The Church weekly Il-Gens Illum is also opposing the project. The Front Kontra l-Golf Kors endorses the report issued by the Church Commission.

The commission states that the Environment Impact Statement submitted by AX Holdings on the proposed golf course failed to properly address the negative effect of the proposed development on a number of resources. The Commission also confirms that the proposed development violates the agreement between the Government and the Holy See, enshrined in Maltese law as the Ecclesiastical Entities (Properties) Act, 1992. If approved, the development would represent a case of social injustice.

The Front Kontra l-Golf Kors therefore urges the Mepa board to take a decision in favour of sustainable development, social justice and the rule of law by rejecting the proposal to develop a golf course at Verdala (PA 4179/99).

In the meantime the Front Kontra l-Golf Kors is also opposing PA 2871/04, which is basically an identical application by the same developer for a golf course in the same area, albeit with some minor changes.
