Although the photographs might look quite bad, they do not reflect the extent of the damage to the surface and the danger it causes to motorists. Government has shown that it is committed to re-constructing roads and building new ones to be proud of. There are many projects on the go, but this road seems to have been totally forgotten.

Let us not forget that a new hotel – one that will probably have one of the best locations in Malta, if not the whole Mediterranean – will be opening next year. It is not exactly ideal to have a road such as this leading to such a prestigious hotel.

Apart from the aesthetic side of it, this road is an absolute menace to drive on. If one hits the seam of a piece of patchwork, the car will veer towards the boundary wall as it follows the contours of the sunken pitch and tar. And, of course, there is the added danger of motorists swerving to avoid potholes and undulations, the potential for a real accident.

Other dangers on the road include collapsed parts of rubble walls, non-existent markings and lighting that is not all that good considering that motorists are negotiating such a treacherous stretch of road. Perhaps it is time for government to commission a study to see what needs to be done to rectify the situation.
