Archbishop Meets missionaries

Malta Independent Monday, 19 July 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The missionaries were from Brazil, Canada, America, India, Kenya, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Peru, Pakistan and Egypt. Most of them have been working as missionaries for about 30 years. They spoke of their pastoral, social and charitable work.

They also addressed the special attention given to the setting up of secular formations such as ministries, catechism centres, education and social assistance.

The missionaries said sects springing up cause them a large number of difficulties. From their speeches it was clear that their work is being greatly appreciated. Some of them have even been given highly esteemed posts, such as Father Albert Brincat who has just been appointed apostolic administrator in Bolivia.

The archbishop expressed his appreciation for the missionaries’ work and said that the lack of priests in Malta is being felt. “Despite this, if anyone working within the Church asks me to work abroad, I always give them my blessing,” concluded the archbishop.

A meeting similar to the one held last week is held annually by the Priests, Religious and Lay Missionaries Secretariat.
