In a statement, the KSU said European Union citizens are being denied the right to study in Malta under the same conditions as local students. Applications for local students to join university were launched yesterday while EU students were only given until 15 days after Malta’s EU accession to apply.

The KSU said it believed that this had created a highly discriminatory situation which may ultimately be of harm not only to Malta’s image in the EU, but also detrimental to Maltese students.“This situation will give the Maltese education system a bad name, and if other EU members states followed our standards it would be very difficult for Maltese students to enjoy one of the most tangible effects of membership,” said KSU president Paul Gonzi.

The KSU called on the university to embrace its European identity and allow EU citizens admission under the same conditions as Maltese students. It also said it would be asking Maltese MEPs to look into the case.
