This calls for measures to be taken for this trend to be stopped, said Labour MP Carmelo Abela in a statement issued yesterday.

Following the publication of the National Statistics Office figures announcing the rise in absenteeism in the primary sector, the Malta Labour party spoke out claiming these figures suggest the bad habit is now starting at an earlier stage. This will result in consequences that are detrimental to society.

The problem of absenteeism is complex and has strong social ties, said Mr Abela. The parents play an important role in this and sometimes unfortunately also contribute to their children’s absence.

As a country, Malta must work towards building a future for these children for them to give a positive contribution to the island. Some are in danger of growing up to be unemployable and worst of all they may have run-ins with the law, Mr Abela continued. Those concerned must therefore do everything in their power to help these students and families through the problems they are facing. Mr Abela questioned the number of school social workers currently handling this problem. He also asked what initiatives are being taken during school hours to help children with difficulties and prevent them from missing school.

“Every one must shoulder the responsibility for this problem – schools, parents and the government as well,” said the Labour MP.

The Education Ministry should be responsible for making sure the structures set up to prevent the rise of absenteeism are working and to ensure those involved have the means to do their job well.

The Education Division does not always have the resources to take immediate productive initiatives. Mr Abela said the Foundation for Educational Services is working towards reducing illiteracy that often leads to absenteeism. Unfortunately this work is being done after school and therefore does not reach everyone. Plans for radical changes in the education system take time and in the meantime, students are falling backwards, said Mr Abela.

It is therefore essential for immediate initiatives to be taken for the trend of absenteeism to be stopped.
