He said serious, social dialogue was already under way at Malta Council for Economic and Social Development level on achieving a social pact for Malta.

During the last few weeks, said Mr Vella, the UHM had concluded 13 collective agreements covering 1,500 employees working in the private sector. Another three agreements were in their final stages, including the one at the Freeport.

This agreement has not yet been reached because there are still a number of issues that have to be resolved. Among these are the privatisation process, the shift system and the financial package for Malta Freeport employees.

Meanwhile, this weekend the union is holding its yearly UHM Sajf in the parking area in front of Ta’ Fra Ben in Qawra.

This event, according to president Gejtu Tanti, strikes a balance between entertainment and discussion.

The event, which is being held tonight and tomorrow evening, will include performances by well-known singers such as Julie and Ludwig.

At 8.15pm on both nights there will be a discussion and the event comes to an end tomorrow evening with an address by UHM secretary general Gejtu Vella. Admission is free.
