During a meeting, representatives from the Malta Maritime Authority, Civil Protection, Oil Pollution Centre, Mepa Pollution Control Division and the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry agreed to step up cooperation to ensure that in case of an emergency each organisation would have a specific role and the situation would be dealt with in a fast and efficient manner.
Present for this meeting were also the representatives of the United Nations agency REMPEC (Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea).
Mr Galea laid down a cooperation plan in which regular coordinated exercises should be carried out with regular upkeep of equipment and trained personnel continuously carrying out exercises in using such equipment. It was suggested that the exiting plans are put in place, with one collective effort and coordination. It was agreed that the committee would be regularly meeting to present its workings upon the terms of reference set by the Ministry for Competitiveness and Communications.
