Last Minute call against Wied Garnaw development

Malta Independent Monday, 23 August 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The movement extended its plea for the area not to be developed.

“Wied Garnaw is characterised by illegal development which is leading to its gradual destruction, even though it lies outside the development zone and is designated as a valley protection zone of agricultural and ecological value in Mepa’s draft South Malta Local Plan.”

“It should be ensured that no development or operations that are illegal or cause

harm to the environment are carried out in the valley.”

The statement continued, saying that the movement supports the Wied Garnaw Action Group and the thousands of people who have signed petitions against the

proposed development, adding that Malta cannot afford to loose more green areas and open spaces in the countryside.

“On the contrary, such areas are to be enjoyed by all and should also be promoted as areas for rural development that also attract agricultural and eco-tourism.”
