Christopher Ellul, 36, from Valletta who has been charged several times with such crimes, allegedly assaulted the woman and held her against her will.
He was also accused of relapsing in view of previous convictions.
The man was given bail against a Lm3,000 personal guarantee.
Magistrate Lawrence Quintano presided over the court. Inspectors Josric Mifsud and Ramon Mercieca prosecuted while Dr Ian Farrugia appeared for the accused.
