He suggested that an employment and social impact assessment should be commissioned before any major merger or competition policy decision is made. This proposal is an integral part of the Socialist Group’s policies.

Mrs Kroes, who is being harshly criticised for the potential conflicts of interest she might have because of the numerous posts she held with many large corporations, answered that the social aspect is important but that it is one of a number that must be taken into consideration.

She said that one must first try things out and then see what is the best solution.

“You can experiment with equipment and with numbers but not with people,” quipped Joseph Muscat, to the approval of the other members of the Socialist Group.

In the meantime, Muscat also took part in meetings of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, which is discussing the preparation of a report on consumer protection in new member states.
