Dr Zammit Dimech said this during a visit to Naxxar last night to unveil a new tourist attraction map in the locality. Naxxar mayor Maria Deguara was also present at the event.

Dr Zammit Dimech said Naxxar was one of the oldest villages in Malta and contributed towards the country’s national history. He said that Naxxar was also the site of an ancient megalithic temple at Tal-Qadi.

“There are also the cart ruts which end at telgha Ta’ Alla u Ommu, the dolmens at Maghtab, Punic tombs, Roman quarries and Catholic catacombs in Salina.” He pointed out that part of the Victoria lines and two De Redin towers were also in the area.

“There are also 11 churches and the parish church, built between 1616 and 1630, is one of the most beautiful in Malta,” he said.

Dr Zammit Dimech said the local council’s decision to put up an attraction map will help put Naxxar “on the map”. He said that there were several villages in Malta that were not sufficiently well known to tourists and he thanked the village for helping in the wider spectrum of Malta’s tourism sector.
