The organisation will set up a stand and exhibition at Buskett with publications and information on birds and nature. There will also be nature and bird-watching walks in Buskett valley (Wied il-Luq) as well as bird of prey observations in the afternoon. Members of the public are encouraged to join the activities by registering at the BirdLife Malta stand. Walks start every half hour between 10am and 12 noon, and between 3pm and 5pm. Bird of Prey observations start from 3pm until 6pm. Participation in the activities is free.

The event coincides with the second World Bird Festival. The World Bird Festival is the largest ever celebration of birds and is comprised of hundreds of exciting bird-watching and bird-related cultural events around the world. The first World Bird Festival in 2001 attracted well over 300,000 people to more than 1,450 events in 88 countries. The sixth World Bird-watch will be held on Sunday, and in Europe it has an additional special meaning as it is also marks the 25th anniversary of the EU Birds Directive.

To commemorate this occasion, BirdLife International, together with the EU Environment Commission, has produced a special occasion T-shirt. This depicts a map of Europe with two dancing cranes as a symbol of the importance of protecting birds across frontiers. Important bird areas in the various EU member states are indicated on the map. Members of the public who participate in the activities will also have the chance of winning one of several information packs that also include this T-shirt.

Buskett is also one of five globally important bird areas. It is one of the major known passage sites for birds of prey in the Maltese Islands as well as being an important staging post for Honey Buzzards and Marsh Harriers, among other birds of prey.

The extensive undergrowth in the valley and slopes provide feeding sites for both wintering and migratory birds. For this reason. it is one of several EU Important Bird Areas in Malta and is a candidate Natura 2000 site.
