Nature Trust Urges caution regarding airstrip in Gozo

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 October 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The trust emphasised that Gozo’s sustainable future lies in the preservation and marketing of its cultural, historical and natural characteristics and its traditional skills and social structure. Development of airports is to be weighed in respect to Gozo’s vision as a green haven for Maltese and tourists alike, as it would necessitate more use of land, especially agricultural land.

Nature Trust urges the Gozitan community to learn the lessons from Malta’s poor track record in sustainability, and work together for sensible long-term options for the island. Gozo is an ideal site for ecotourism, diving tourism, nature tourism and agrotourism, and efforts and energy should be targeted on these rather than fatalistic options. The slump in the Maltese tourism product of recent years is sad evidence of what unsustainable tourism can lead to.
