In the month under review, employment in the private direct production sector increased by 44 persons in comparison to April. In relation to the same month in the previous year, the number of the full-time gainfully occupied in the private direct production sector decreased by 954 persons. Employment in the manufacturing sector increased by 75 in May over the preceding month.
The private market services sector increased its employment levels by 301 persons in May this year in comparison to last April. There was an increase of 449 persons employed in the private market services sector on a year-to-year basis. In May, the hotels and catering establishments increased 116 full-time employed persons. The wholesale and retail trade sub-sector increased 86 persons in its full-time employment complement over the previous month.
In May, an increase of 36 employees in the public sector was recorded. On a year-to-year basis, the public sector decreased by 350 employees.
Part-time employment
In May, there were 19,534 persons holding a part-time employment as their primary occupation. On the other hand, there were 15,796 persons who held a part-time job in addition to their full-time employment last May. Accordingly, all in all, there are 35,330 part-time jobs in the labour market. Those persons who hold their part-time employment as their primary occupation are more likely to be employed in the market services sector rather than the direct production sector or the civil service. Actually, in May, there were 14,757 part-timers employed in the market services sector. These are distributed in the retail, banking, transport, and hotels sub-sectors.
Registered unemployed
In May, there were 8,104 registered unemployed with the ETC. Of these 7,454 were registering under Part 1, while 650 were registering under Part 2 of the unemployment register. The registered unemployment rate stood at 5.6 per cent of the labour supply. The registered unemployment rate for men stood at 6.3 per cent, whereas that for women stood at 3.7 per cent.
