The OHSA said that it is responsible only for lifts installed in workplaces. The lifts have to be checked every six months, with a copy of the verification sent to the authority. In cases where the lift is considered to be dangerous, the use of the lift is stopped immediately until the necessary repairs are carried out.

Together with the Malta Standards Authority, the OHSA is working on new regulations that cover all forms of apparatus, including lifts. The regulations make a distinction between equipment that is used at work and that used in other places.

Although the authority carries out regular inspections in several places, it cannot be present everywhere. Therefore it is the responsibility of all those who notice any danger to inform it about the matter.

The authority always investigated and took steps where it thought they were necessary. It called upon the association to inform it about lifts that the association considers as being dangerous.
