The embellishment work carried out in Cospicua is part of a chain of projects undertaken by the ministry to revive village and city centres across Malta, Minister Zammit said. The work started during the last week of June and is now in its finishing stages, he said, adding that all the works will be carried out by employees of the Works Division. Besides the paving of the square, the project includes the replacement of the streetlights and the installation of wooden benches and railings, fabricated by the division’s workers.

The actual paving was done by the Construction and Maintenance Deparment using porfido, a stone mixture of pebbles and tal-qawwi rock. The department was also responsible for replacing the street’s electricity wiring and poles, which had been removed before the paving work started. A total of 950 square metres of porfido slabs have been laid. Once finished, the square will include a number of new parking bays, some of which will be reserved for disabled people.

The minister pointed out that similar work is being carried out in Mellieha and Balzan, while announcing that projects at Zurrieq, Mqabba and Xaghra will start in the coming days. He also mentioned that the ministry had just concluded talks with the Birzebbuga council regarding the embellishment of the town’s centre.

Minister Zammit congratulated the division for the sterling work done, saying that the team working with the division is constantly giving proof of their ability to carry out quality embellishment work efficiently and within schedule.
