In her speech Her Excellency pointed out that this is a special day when Spain commemorates "what for centuries has been called 'el Día de la Hispanidad', the beginning of a new 'era' in world history and in the history of Spain. It was on 12 October 1492 when under the kingdom patronage of 'Los Reyes Católicos' Spain discovered a new world and Cristobal Cólon arrived at a new continent, America, whose first island was called 'La Española.' Ever since, Spain has expanded its culture throughout those vast territories today called Hispanoamerica, so many countries that share our language and cultural heritage.'
Addressing the President, Her Excellency said that she would like to 'share with you, your government and the Maltese people, the opening of the Embassy of Spain in Malta'. Villa Macedonia has been the residence of Spain since 1977."
