Having already two successful artistic sisters in the family, she herself chose to go to the University of Utrecht and of Leyden where she received a masters in languages.

Later, together with her husband, she travelled the world: journalism during the Lebanese civil war, the diplomatic service in Australia, Germany, Sweden and Malta.

Elske studied art at the National School of Art in Canberra, Australia and later at the Vrije Academie in The Hague, followed by exhibitions in Germany, Sweden and Holland.

With a biologist as her father, Elske has always felt a close relationship with nature. Upon arrival in Malta she sought to find her connection to Malta through its nature and its history. Indeed, the ageless trees on the road to the oldest city in this country – Mdina – and the one near the temple of Hagar Qim have served as inspirations for this exhibition.
