This phase includes the construction of a new sewerage system, the construction of a promenade, a new rainwater control system and the overall embellishment of the area. The first part of this phase should be completed by Christmas, while the second and final part of the second phase will be completed by June.

The project, costing more than Lm550,000, included the importation of 7,000 tonnes of coarse sand from Jordan. The sand was chosen after studies showed that this type would not be washed away by the sea currents.

The first phase of the project cost around Lm350,000, which also included the construction of a water culvert that will be connected to the culvert being constructed during this second phase.

The rainwater culverts are being constructed to ensure that the rainwater does not wash away the expensive sand. A tender is to be issued soon for the provision of catering at the beach.

The beach, which is being managed by the Malta Tourism Authority, proved very attractive for the more than 100,000 swimmers who swam in St George’s Bay last summer.

The second phase will also see the construction of public toilets and showers, which will be part of the building from where the catering service will be provided.
