Dr Gonzi will also be taking part in a meeting with the other heads of state within the European Popular Party to discuss Turkey’s application for EU membership as well as the developments in the European Commission.

Before leaving, Dr Gonzi said the heads of state will also be meeting the Iraqi Prime Minister to speak of the development in the election. “This election is an important step towards democracy in Iraq,” concluded Dr Gonzi.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by, among others, Foreign Minister Michael Frendo and Malta’s permanent representative to the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana. Dr Gonzi is expected back on Saturday.
