Musical About the Great Siege to be performed in February

Malta Independent Tuesday, 23 November 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The musical 1565, is the first musical ever to be written and staged locally or internationally about this important historic event. It was officially launched by Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta yesterday.

The music is composed by maestro Paul Abela and Malcolm Galea wrote the script. Director Anthony Bezzina is bringing the musical to life together with a large cast made up of hundreds of top Maltese performers.

Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said that 1565 has gone down as one of the most important dates in Maltese history. “And although much has been written in the history books, a musical to commemorate it has never been produced,” he said.

Masquerade had moved in to fill that void, he said. 1565 is not an actual narration of the siege itself, but is a story that uses the Great Siege as a background.

“It has all the ingredients of a musical: action, drama, romance, tragedy and humour. The songs are melodious and feature love, tragedy, drama and humour,” he said.

Dr Zammit Dimech pointed out that this is Paul Abela’s fifth musical, and his first in 15 years. He said: “1565 was a turning point in our history. I am delighted to have launched this spectacular musical production with one of our most important historical dates as the focal point.”

Dr Zammit Dimech said musicals were a part of Maltese cultural heritage and should be encouraged. “At a time when we are doing our best to promote Malta as an experience, musicals with our history used as their setting are a fitting contribution,” he said.

Masquerade was founded eight years ago and has produced musicals, plays and comedies including Annie, The King and I, Cabaret, Noises Off and Amadeus.

Writer Malcolm Galea said: “As with all wars, the Siege of Malta was horrific beyond belief, but it was also punctured by the occasional moment of tenderness.

“That is why I have chosen to portray a story from a human aspect.

“Although certain aspects have been exaggerated, the audience will be witnessing real things that happened to real people – a story larger than life,” he said.

1565 focuses on a young knight, Henri, and his friend Alessandro. At first, they enjoy life as the knights were famous for doing. As the siege starts, Henri falls in love with Anna, and the stakes are suddenly raised. Suddenly all three are forced to grow up very quickly as they struggle to avoid the fate that destiny has prepared for them.

The musical is being produced in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and will be staged at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta between 10 and 13 February 2005.
