Maltese Tourism sector to get E4m funding

Malta Independent Saturday, 15 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The European Union has approved E4 million in funding for Malta to improve its tourism and cultural product, said Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech yesterday.

Speaking in Sliema, Dr Zammit Dimech said that a few months ago, details of a funding scheme for the tourism sector were released. With this scheme, applicants contribute 40 per cent of the cost of a project and receive the remaining 60 per cent in grant form for marketing and structural improvements.

This year, the Malta Tourism Authority, with funding from the EU, will be undertaking two projects with a combined investment of E 1 million.

The first of these projects will incorporate the embellishment of Crucifix Hill and Giloramo Cassar Avenue as part of the Cruise Liner Terminal project.

Another project will see the restoration of Howard Gardens in Mdina, which will tie in well with work being carried out at the Roman Domus and other work in the Silent City.

Dr Zammit Dimech said eight Maltese projects had been

chosen for funding out of a total of 233 from across the European Union.

He also said that the pre-

historic temples of Mnajdra and Hagar Qim had also been put on the list for funding and work is expected to start next year.
