George Degiorgio seeks to testify in Daphne Caruana Galizia murder probe

George Degiorgio, currently serving a 40-year prison sentence for his role in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has filed an urgent request to testify in the ongoing inquiry into her murder.

The application was submitted to inquiring magistrate Victor Axiak and signed by Degiorgio's lawyers, Noel Bianco and Leslie Cuschieri. Degiorgio recently appeared before the Criminal Court in connection with the 2015 murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop, in which he was also found guilty. Both he and three other members of the Maksar gang have now been sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in both murders.

In his request, Degiorgio referenced the ongoing legal proceedings involving his co-accused, Robert Agius (known as "Ta' Maksar") and Jamie Vella, both of whom were convicted for supplying the bomb used in Caruana Galizia's killing.

Degiorgio claims that immediately after the verdict in the Chircop case was delivered, he turned to Superintendent Keith Arnaud and expressed his desire to speak out.

"Justice was not served," Degiorgio allegedly told Arnaud, stating he now wants to disclose all he knows about the assassination.

Degiorgio emphasised that his request to testify comes "without any advantage to himself," claiming his intention is to ensure justice is served - both by holding all responsible parties accountable and by exonerating anyone wrongfully imprisoned.

Since pleading guilty in 2022, Degiorgio and his brother have attempted to retract their confession, arguing that they were pressured into admitting guilt after their defence lawyer resigned shortly before trial.
