Spring Equinox special guided tour at Mnajdra Temples on Sunday

Malta Independent Wednesday, 16 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Heritage Malta is once again organising a guided tour of the Mnajdra Temples on Sunday to mark the equinox.

The unique setting of the Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi, overlooking the coast, lends the temples a charm which cannot be found in any other large-scale megalithic buildings on the Maltese Islands.

In a bid to provide an enhanced experience to visitors, only 40 people will be allowed access to the Mnajdra Temples during this special guided tour.

Sunrise on the first day of each season underlines the relationship between these temples and celestial bodies. Although it is not known for certain whether these orientations were intentional, the orientations are so systematic that this is very probable. In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the motion of the stars, moon and sun could have been related to the changing seasons and times of planting as well as harvesting crops.

On Sunday, at sunrise, visitors at the temples will marvel as the sun’s rays will shine through the exact centre of the main doorway to the South Temple.

A limited number of tickets for the Mnajdra tour are selling for Lm5 and are strictly on a first come first served basis. Interested parties are to purchase their tickets from Heritage Malta Head Office – Old University Buildings, Merchants Street, Valletta by not later than tomorrow. Please call on 22954307 for any queries.

The guided tours start at around 6.30am.
