Award For Cusumano Nero D’Avola wine

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Cusumano Nero D’Avola 2003, imported and distributed in Malta by Bicanter Distributors, has been awarded a National Oscar as the best Italian red wine under E10 by the prestigious Almanacco del Bere Bene of Gambero Rosso.

The wine can be tasted in many leading wine bars and restaurants in Malta. The Nero D’Avola grape is a Sicilian indigenous grape and has become very popular both internationally and also locally.

The Gambero Rosso termed the Cusumano Nero D’Avola 2003 ‘a small wonder’. They said that Diego and Alberto Cusumano have created a splendid wine with a deep ruby colour and wonderful fruit on the nose. The wine has gentle tannins, is medium bodied and has a long persistent finish. “Excellent for an entry level wine”.

The 2003 Nero D’Avola has been an immense success for Cusumano and in fact it is sold out. But the prestigious Sicilian company, which also makes the award winning Noa and Sagana, has promised that the 2004 vintage is even better than the 2003.

The 2003 Benuara, a blend of Nero D’Avola and Syrah has developed and is now also drinking well. The wine was a finalist for the ‘three glasses’ award of the Gambero Rosso, the topmost category for wines in Italy.

In the coming weeks, Bicanter Distributors will be introducing the 2004 Nero D’Avola. This will be distributed in various wine bars and restaurants. Watch out for special promotions. Bicanter Distributors can be contacted on 7947 2273, 7980 0088 or [email protected].

Wine enthusiasts can collect the last Nero D’Avola’s from the 2003 vintage directly from Bicanter Distributors.
