Man Ordered to pay damages

A man from Qormi was given a suspended prison sentence yesterday on condition that he pays Lm1,934 in damages to another person, after willfully smashing his car.

Owen Zammit, aged 30, was found guilty of causing more than Lm1,000 worth of damage to a Volkswagen Polo belonging to Gordon Cassar on 3 April 2005. He was also found guilty of using obscene language in public, breaching the peace and threatening Mr Cassar.

The court, presided over by magistrate Saviour Demicoli, ordered Zammit to pay compensation to Mr Cassar within 18 months, and bound him not to approach Mr Cassar against a personal guarantee of Lm100. He sentenced Zammit to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for three years.

Police inspector Maria Stella Cutajar prosecuted.
