Beacons On historic towers for the night of St John

Malta Independent Thursday, 23 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

As part of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of its foundation, Din l-Art Helwa, national trust of Malta, will be lighting beacons on two historic towers – that of St Agatha’s Tower, or the Red Tower in Mellieha, and on Santa Marija Tower on Comino.

The beacons are to be lit on the feast of St John, tomorrow, at 9.30pm, in keeping with the tradition of the Knights of St John who lit beacons atop their coastal fortifications and towers to celebrate the feast of their patron saint.

The public is advised that the best vantage points to view the two beacons are from the top of Mellieha bypass and from Mellieha ridge from where the night illumination of both historic sites can be admired.
