The Archdiocese of Malta announced that over a period of eight weeks, the Maltese and Gozitan people have raised €31,485 for the people of Myanmar who have been suffering greatly following a severe earthquake that struck the southeast Asian country in March.

It also announced that over the past three years, since 2022, over €708,000 have been collected by the Church for people in various emergency situations.

This includes a sum of €358,300 to the Ukrainian people in 2022 for their basic needs, a total of €285,650 for the people of Turkey and Syria after being hit by a major earthquake, and an additional €33,000 to provide aid following another colossal earthquake in Morocco and Libya.

This fundraising campaign was coordinated by Caritas Malta at the request of the Bishops of Malta and Gozo, and closed on 22 May 2025.

Donations were submitted by individuals, parishes across Malta and Gozo, as well as companies and other private entities.

This €31,485 sum was donated to Caritas Internationalis for necessary support to be provided to the people of Myanmar; this includes basic necessities like emergency shelter, food, medicine, and hygiene supplies.

The earthquake in Myanmar, which struck the nation on 28 March, registering 7.7 on the Richter scale, affected over 17 million people, injuring 6,000 people and killing 5,000 more. Approximately 120,000 homes were affected and around 48,000 were devastated. Schools, hospitals, bridges, and important sites were severely damaged across the region of central Myanmar - especially at its epicentre, in the town of Sagaing.

The Church in Malta, together with Caritas Malta, said it is committed to continuing its work and responding to emergency calls through Maltese society.
