Bank of Valletta is supporting the restoration of an 18th century positivo organ located in the chapel of Santa Maria at Hal-Xluq on the outskirts of Siggiewi. The restoration is being undertaken by the Kunsill Patrimonju Kulturali (KPK) – Siggiewi, which was set up specifically to advise the local church authorities on the condition of historical and cultural properties and artifacts within the limits of the parish of Siggiewi

BOV Siggiewi branch manager Emanuel Tagliaferro presented the sponsorship to KPK Siggiewi chairman Carmel Cascun in the presence of the Rev. Archpriest Albert Buhagiar, during a visit to the workshop in Siggiewi where the organ is temporarily stored awaiting continuation of the restoration.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr Tagliaferro said: “Bank of Valletta is proud to support the restoration of this organ, in itself a rare piece of Malta’s rich cultural heritage.

“BOV is taking an active role within the community of Siggiewi. Not only do we seek to provide added value financial services to customers, but we also take an active role in supporting initiatives of a cultural nature that enrich the heritage of Siggiewi. We are confident that the bank’s sponsorship will support the efforts of the KPK in giving the opportunity to the Siggiewi and the Maltese community to once again enjoy the sound of this fine musical instrument,” he concluded.

Dr Cascun thanked Bank of Valletta for its sponsorship and said: “This organ, a unique 18th century piece, was on the verge of being irretrievably lost due to the poor environmental conditions in the chapel, and also due to misuse and vandalism over the years. The KPK has entrusted the work to expert organ restorer Robert Buhagiar who will, over an estimated period of three years, restore the organ to its former glory.”

Dr Cascun encouraged other organisations to come forward and support the KPK to complete the restoration of the organ and the chapel at Hal Xluq.
