New Chairman for Gozo Channel

Joseph Borg was appointed as the new Gozo Channel Co Ltd chairman after Dr Maurice Zarb Adami asked Investment, Industry and Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt not to re-appoint him at the annual general meeting of 5 July.

Minister Austin Gatt thanked Dr Zarb Adami for his services. During his term in office, Dr Zarb Adami led the implementation of the restructuring programme of the organisation, cutting costs by Lm200,000 per annum and introducing core changes in the operation of the organisation, thus making it more efficient and commercially viable. He also led the process of the introduction of a Public Service Obligation contract, with the government introducing a sustainable financing model to cover the company’s obligations towards Gozitans’ and senior citizens’ travelling needs.

Joseph Borg has been appointed to serve as Gozo Channel Co Ltd chairman from 6 July 2005 to 5 July 2007. The appointment was issued following Cabinet’s approval of the minister`s recommendation.

Mr Borg, 45, served as director of F X Borg Furniture Ltd in 1984. He also served as managing director of the same company since 1986.

He served as director on the board of the Malta Development Corporation from 1989 to 1992. He was also involved in the Gozo Committee of the Malta Federation of Industries, from 1988 to 1992 as its secretary and then as its chairman from 1992 to 1993. He also served on the Council of the Malta Federation of Industries. Joseph Borg acted as director of Bank of Valletta plc since 1998. He also was a member of the council and secretary of the Gozo Business Chamber since 1999.

Mr Borg serves in a number of voluntary organisations in Gozo, among others as director of the Oasi Foundation (Foundation for Drug Rehabilitation) since its inception.
