Bank of Valletta has sponsored the restoration works on the painting of St Peter of Alcantara at the St Mary of Jesus Church (Ta’ Giezu) in Valletta. The old painting was in a very urgent need of restoration.

The Bank’s sponsorship was presented by Chris Busuttil Leaver, executive head at Bank of Valletta’s branch and business centre in Valletta to Fr Anton Farrugia, guardian of the church and friary. Speaking during the presentation, Mr Busuttil Leaver said “Bank of Valletta’s sponsorship towards the restoration of St Peter’s painting has ensured that this painting will be enjoyed by future generations.

“Bank of Valletta prides itself as the patron of the local arts and culture and this initiative is further proof of the Bank’s commitment towards the preservation of local heritage.”

Thanking Bank of Valletta for its sponsorship, Fr Farrugia stated that prior to the restoration works, the painting had deteriorated to the extent that various features and details were no longer visible. He explained that St Peter of Alcantara was a Franciscan friar born in 1499, who dedicated his life to spreading the word of the Lord.

The painting of St Peter of Alcantara was restored by Fr Charles Vella, who is also currently undergoing studies to determine the identity of the painter.
