Bank of Valletta is supporting the restoration works on the lime-kiln (Kalkara tal-Gir) situated in the locality of Sannat in Gozo. The restoration works are being undertaken by the Sannat local council.
Jack Thewma, Manager of Bank of Valletta’s Gozo Branch presented the bank’s sponsorship to Carmel Camilleri, mayor of the Sannat Local Council. Presenting the sponsorship, Mr Thewma said: “Bank of Valletta is a strong supporter of the local heritage. The Bank’s support of the restoration works on this historical landmark further consolidates our commitment to our rich heritage and also highlights Bank of Valletta’s active role within the Gozitan community.”
Mr Camilleri thanked Bank of Valletta for its sponsorship and stressed on the importance of restoring unique landmarks such as the Sannat lime-Kiln. “This kiln was built before 1900 and formerly served as a mill until it started operating as a lime-kiln after the Second World War. Studies carried out by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna have concluded that the kiln, which presents some unique features in buildings of its kind, is in a precarious state, and it is only thanks to timely restoration works that this attraction will be saved from being lost forever,” said Mr Camilleri.
“It is said that the original fittings and millstones when the Sannat lime-kiln was still used as a grinding mill are now fixed to the windmill at Qala,” he concluded.
