15th Edition of Malta Journalism Awards launched

Malta Independent Saturday, 30 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) has announced that the 15th edition of the Malta Journalism Awards, which honours those journalists who through their writing or broadcasting in 2004 have distinguished themselves and contributed to improving the standard of journalism in our country, will take place on Monday, 14 November.

This year’s edition will have a number of innovations in the prizes as well, with the increase of new categories.

IGM chairman Malcolm Naudi announced there will be a new category about Cultural Tourism, which will be sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority, while the Print Category will be split into two categories – News and Features – due to the large number of submissions in that category.

Another innovation will be the nomination of the Best Journalist of the Year. The winner will be awarded the opportunity of a 10-day attachment with a British newspaper or radio/television station.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists would like to thank the British High Commission in Malta and HSBC Bank Malta plc for sponsoring this category, and the Tumas Fenech Foundation for Education in Journalism for its support for the award of this prestigious prize.

New trophies are also being introduced this year. These were chosen after a competition in which a number of Maltese artists took part. The winning design is that by Bernard Scicluna, who was awarded a Lm200 prize.

The new trophy is made of marble, glass and metal and symbolizes journalism in its different forms in the local and international scene.

The Categories for this year are:

Print Journalism – News – HSBC Bank Malta plc

Print Journalism – Features – Vodafone

Broadcast Script – Broadcasting Authority

Broadcast Film – Broadcasting Authority

Press Photography – Malta International Airport

Press Cartoons – Farsons Foundation

Sports Journalism – Michele Peresso, operators of Eurosport

e-Journalism – Hewlett Packard

Travel Journalism – Emirates Airline

Cultural Tourism Journalism – Malta Tourism Authority

Maltese Language in Journalism – Maltapost plc

Other sponsors of the MJA are BPC International and the Tumas Fenech Foundation for Education in Journalism.

This year there will also be the Eighth Edition of the Gold Award, which, as usual, is sponsored entirely by BPC International. This award is granted to that journalist whose distinguished contribution to the journalism profession was not only distinguished, but would also serve as an example and inspiration for others engaged in the profession.

Submissions for the Malta Journalism Awards 2005 have to be taken personally at the offices of the Institute of Maltese Journalists, 104, Old Mint Street, Valletta, on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 August, 2005, between 6.00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

Application forms can be obtained from IGM Secretary Joe A Vella on telephone numbers 21316958/99450746 or on e-mail address [email protected].
