One of the top international bands, Planet Funk, will headline Tribu: Ten, the tenth anniversary edition of Malta’s most popular summer event, Tribu, which will be held on Sunday, 14 August. Planet Funk, who performed in the Live 8 concert held in Rome, will be performing live in Gianpula fields, one of the three venues of Tribu: Ten, which also include Tattingers and Amazonia, the after-hours venue.
All venues will be licensed to stay open until 4am and will cater for different musical styles including house, techno and alternative. Another top international act to perform on the night is Erick Morillo, who will be giving a special four-hour 10th anniversary set. Other DJs include Justin Berkovi, Luke Slater and Ellen Alien.
Details of Tribu:Ten were given during a press conference held at Gianpula and addressed by the organisers Silvio Bartolo, Desmond Vella and Reuben Spiteri together with Carlo Borg Bonaci from XFM and Mireille Bonello, the “face of Tribu”.
Planet Funk will kick of Tribu:Ten with a concert starting at 9pm at Gianpula. The Anglo-Italian outfit is known for its massive worldwide hits including The Switch, Inside all the people, Chase the Sun and Who Said. Moreover, Planet Funk have made a name for themselves with the remixes of recent hits such as 14 reasons of Faithless and New Order’s Waiting for the Siren’s Call.
The band has so far released two albums, with the most recent one, The Illogical Consequence, being published in April 2005. Apart from the Live 8 concert, Planet Funk will be touring in Italy with gigs at Festivalbar and MTV Day.
“We are very proud and honoured to have Planet Funk headlining this year’s Tribu. Together with them is a host of top international and local acts for all musical tastes. With the Gianpula Fields open-air live venue, people can have a festival feel to this year’s Santa Marija event,” said Silvio Bartolo.
Clubbers can opt between the Gianpula House mansion and the Tattingers Techno Arena. After 4am, Amazonia will open for sunrise treats and breakfast.
“This is a new concept in clubbing and partying. People can decide to move from one venue to another thanks to our “party buses”, which will be branded and customised with speakers – so that the party continues even during transit,” said Desmond Vella.
Speaking about the legacy of Tribu, Vella said they have been organising the event for the past 10 years. He added that over 70,000 people have turned up for these events, which have been held in various venues in Malta and Gozo including Popeye Village, Ta’ Qali, Gianpula, La Grotta in Gozo, Marsa Sports Club and the Quarry in Siggiewi.
