At around 1pm yesterday, the Armed Forces of Malta were informed that seven divers were finding it difficult to reach the shore at Dwejra in Gozo. All the divers, apart from one who was winched to safety, managed to swim to land.
Following the report, which was received by the AFM Rescue Coordination Centre at 1.10pm yesterday, the AFM Alouette (AS12) helicopter was dispatched to the area. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Anthony Zammit, the winch man was Bombardier Ivan Saliba and the rescuers
were Staff Sergeant Martin
Borg and Bombardier Jesmond Said.
The only diver in serious difficulty was a German woman who was winched to safety by the AFM helicopter and immediately taken to hospital.
