The Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta together with the Marine Association will be holding a memorial service at the Msida Bastion Garden of Rest on 22 October, starting at 11 am.
The event includes a comprehensive programme of commemoration of the maritime history of Malta connected with the British Royal Navy, in particular to commemorate the bicentennial of the naval victory of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson at Trafalgar.
The programme will include contingent marches into the historical Msida Bastion Garden of Rest, a Memorial Service and wreath laying ceremony, the playing of the last post, a bagpipe lament and a Reveille.
The men who served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines throughout the ages, the seamen and marines who served during the Napoleonic Wars and the early 19th century, officers and men who made the Royal Navy one of the finest fighting units in history will be remembered. Indeed, monuments to several personalities who served during these wars are still to be found in the fine neoclassical Garden of Rest which has been restored for public enjoyment by Din l-Art Helwa. This historic garden is open to the public by volunteers of Din L-Art Helwa and enjoys a splendid vista over Marsamxetto creek. It is best found by taking the second turning left on Great Siege Road, Floriana, below the public library across from the Phoenicia Hotel, and then taking the second fork right.
Booking for this special commemorative and colourful event is being done through the Din l-Art Helwa office at 133, Melita Street, Valletta, or by telephone on 2122-5952. Tickets cost Lm1 and include seating and refreshments.
