The Malta Environment and Planning Authority determined 779 applications in August and received 611 new applications. In September, it determined 878 applications, while receiving only 211 new applications.
By the end of September, the pending caseload was 3,263 cases.
In August, the authority processed 90 notifications of development and issued 99 stop and enforcement notices, 70 in Malta and 29 in Gozo. A total of 56 enforcement cases were also closed in this month – 38 in Malta and 18 in Gozo – with 43 being issued with a sanctionable permit and 11 where the owners decided to remove the illegal development.
During September, the authority processed 57 notifications of development while it saw a substantial increase in stop and enforcement notices, which numbered 159. Of the 125 cases in Malta and 34 in Gozo, 63 were sanctioned by a permit, while 32 were resolved by owners removing the illegal development.
The Pollution Prevention and Control inspectorate received and investigated 66 complaints in August and 63 in September, and carried out 95 inspections in August and 33 in September. The section also carried out 26 inspections that included the Sant’ Antnin facility and the Ta’ Zwejra and Maghtab landfills.
