Masquerade To present Agnes of God

Malta Independent Saturday, 15 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Written by John Pielmeier, Agnes of God focuses on a young nun, Sister Agnes, who is accused of murdering her child after a dead baby is found in a convent. Appearing on the surface as an old-fashioned whodunit, Agnes of God is really a thought-provoking investigation of the relationship between faith and science, the soul and the mind, and the miraculous and the ordinary.

Doctor Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, is asked to determine the sanity of a young nun accused of murdering her own baby. Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior, seems bent on protecting Sister Agnes from the doctor, and Livingstone’s suspicions are immediately aroused. In searching for solutions to various mysteries (Who killed the baby? Who fathered the child?), Livingstone forces all three women, herself included, to face realities in their own lives and re-examine the meaning of faith and the commitment of love.

The production will star two of Malta’s top actresses – Monica Attard and Karmen Azzopardi. It also introduces the young actress, Nadia Vella, who has just returned from the UK where she performed in the musical Annie.

Agnes of God will be staged at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta on 21, 22 and 23 October at 7.30pm. Booking is now open on 21246389, 21246619, email: [email protected], [email protected] www.teatrumanoel.com.

Masquerade is supported by Bank of Valletta, Travelex Financial Services, Portomaso, Malta Tourism Authority, and Air Malta.
